OPPORTUNITIES FOR NON MAJORS

 

It's not necessary to major in music for students to take advantage of many of the classes, programs and scholarships offered by the IU Southeast Music Department.

ENSEMBLES
Any IU Southeast student - regardless of major - can participate in one or more of the university's performing ensembles, inclulding the Concert Choir, Orchestra, Concert Band, Brass Band, or Opera/Musical Theatre Workshop.

IU Southeast OrchestraIU Southeast Orchestra
The Orchestra explores the riches of the symphonic repertoire. Along with symphonies and concertos, orchestral literature in all styles and from all stylistic periods is performed, including concertos, operatic repertoire and major choral/orchestral works.

IU Southeast Concert BandIU Southeast Concert Band
The Concert Band performs the highest quality literature, from band classics to the latest international contemporary works. Versatility and variety mark the tradition of the Concert Band.

IU Southeast Concert ChoirIU Southeast Concert Choir
The Concert Choir performs outstanding and highly varied choral literature drawn from all styles and historical periods, with an emphasis on traditional college repertoire and major choral works. Chamber and Madrigal Ensembles are drawn from the Concert Choir by selection of the director. An audition is required.

Commonwealth Brass BandCommonwealh Brass Band
The Commonwealth Brass Band - an Ensemble In Residence at IU Southeast - is based on the English style of Brass Bands. Repertoire is selected to highlight this tradition. The Brass Band takes part in National Brass Band Competitions.

IU Southeast Community ChorusIU Southeast Community Chorus
Mainly composed of community, faculty and staff, the Community Chorus performs a variety of literature, including major works, and often performs in collaboration with the Concert Choir. Auditions are not required.

Guitar lesson

PRIVATE LESSONS
Private, one-on-one lessons - for college credit - are available for most instruments and voice, for the beginner and advanced player alike. Just register for the course as you would any other class. Prior to the start of the semester, contact the Music Department to obtain your instructor's contact information to arrange the day and time of your lesson. Lessons are one hour per week and earn 2 credit hours. In addition to the regular 2 credit hour tuition, an applied music fee is assesed. The applied music fee is generally equal to 1 credit hour of in-state tution. Non-credit lessons are available through the Arts Institute.

GROUP CLASSES
For those who would prefer to learn an instrument in a group setting rather than a private lesson, the Music Department offers group classes in Piano, Guitar, and Voice. There is no applied music fee for group classes.

Lower level music courses are open to any IU Southeast student, regardless of his/her major. Please note that some courses carry prerequisites (consult the Schedule of Classes).
