Those auditioning should:

  • Prepare a short comic monologue (no longer than one minute)
  • Prepare 16 bars of a song. An accompanist will be provided and a CD player will be available.
  • Bringe a resume and a headshot if available.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN  
AN OLD WOMAN 55-70 yrs old. One of the Poor.
   
BILLY BOY BILL 35-50 yrs old. One of the Poor, typically shy.
   
BOBBY STRONG

25-35 yrs old. (E3-C6)
The dashing young everyman who works for Miss Pennywise at the poorest, filthiest urinal in town; the eventual protagonist and romantic hero who starts a revolution, and falls in love with Hope Cladwell along the way.

   
CALDWELL B. CALDWELL 60-70 yrs old. (C2-G5)
The evil president and owner of the Urine Good Company, a miserly moneygrubber who gleefully exploits the poor.
   
CALDWELL'S SECRETARY 25-35 yrs old
   
DR. BILLEAUX 30-50 yrs old. Head of Research and Development at UGC.
   
HOPE CALDWELL 25-35 yrs old. (G3-G5)
Cladwell's ravishingly beautiful daughter, torn between her love for her father and her new love for Bobby. Having just returned from the Most Expensive University in the World, she begins the show as an innocent young girl, but eventually is exposed to her father's evil doings and evolves into the leader of the revolution.
   
HOT BLADES HARRY 55-65 yrs old. (A3-F5)
One of the Poor, a psychopathic, violent loose cannon.
   
JOSEPH "OLD MAN" STRONG 55-65 yrs old.
Bobby's rebellious father, whose refusal to pay the fee causes him to be sent to Urinetown, ultimately launching the revolution.
   
JOSEPHINE "MA" STRONG 55-65 yrs old. (B3-D5)
Bobby's mother, a strong-willed old woman who is able to withstand the hard hand life has dealt her.
   
LITTLE BECKY TWO-SHOES 20-30 yrs old. (B4-E5)
One of the Poor; foul-mouthed, impulsive, accusatory.
   
LITTLE SALLY 20-30 yrs old. (A3-D5)
A precocious, thoroughly irreverent and smartly funny street urchin; the quasi-narrator who always outsmarts Lockstock, and constantly questions the play's logic.
   
MR. McQUEEN 35-45 yrs old. (B3-E5)
Cladwell's sycophantic assistant/lackey. A servile yes man.
   
MRS. MILLENNIUM 20-30 yrs old.
A trusted UGC employee.
   
OFFICER BARREL 40-50 yrs old. (F2-E5)
Lockstock's partner. He harbors a surprising secret.
   
OFFICER LOCKSTOCK 40-50 yrs old. (G3-G5)
The tongue-in-cheek narrator of the story. A corrupt policeman who secretly kills off guilty pee-ers.
   
PENELOPE PENNYWISE

40-50 yrs old. (A3-G5)
The tough, jaded warden of the poorest, filthiest urinal in town. A shrewd, penny-scrounging cheapskate, Pennywise is a figure of authority and lives to maintain order at the public bathrooms. Hollman says the character was partly inspired by that of Mr. Peachum from The Threepenny Opera, and her music resembles that of Leocadia Begbick in The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny. She was once Cladwell's one-time lover and is secretly Hope's mother. She softens over the course of the show.

   
ROCKY THE STOCKFISH 35-50 yrs old. One of the Poor, the revolution's stoic enforcer.
   
SENATOR FLIPP 40-50 yrs old. (D3-E5)
A greedy, cowardly politician in Caldwell's pocket.
   
SOUPY SUE 25-35 yrs old. One of the Poor, easily panicked.
   
TINY TOM 30-50 yrs old. One of the Poor, an idiotic man-child.

Casting Policy

Auditions are open to the public.

Every effort is made to cast the best and/or most appropriate actor for each role for each show. However, since we are first a foremost an institution of higher learning, it is often necessary to consider the needs of our students in order to further educational goals.

Those who are cast, regardless of whether they are a member of the IU Southeast student body or a member of the general public, are expected to attend all rehearsals and perform all performances.
