Description of Speech Major
As a communication major, you will acquire knowledge and skills you can put to work in a variety of people-related careers. The curriculum is not designed to prepare you for a particular job slot, but through training in the communications arts and sciences, you acquire skills that will open up a wide choice of careers. Studies show that more than 70 percent of our waking hours are spent trying to communicate through words and actions. The need for good communications in all areas of life – government, business, education, industry – will always exist.
The four IU Southeast Concentrations for Communication Majors are:

Your major is not your career. Of course it can be.
A chemistry major can become a chemist, a history major can become an historian. But it is much more likely that your career choices will be enormously varied, and not tied to a specific major at all.
The 21st century workplace will challenge you to have many different jobs and most probably multiple careers. Your major will provide you a broad range of skills which will enable you to stay marketable in the fast-changing work world.
