Want a work-study job?

Having a work-study award does not guarantee you a position.  You must apply for jobs you are interested in, and employers are not required to hire you, so be prepared to make a good impression.  View open positions now on the IU Southeast Career Development website.  To apply for one of the listed work-study positions contact the employer directly.  Give them a completed work-study application and a print of either your IU Email work-study confirmation or your financial aid award summary showing you have a work-study award (in OneStart's Student Center).  Don't have a work-study award?  Request one now from your IU email account.

Get a job, earn a scholarship!

By doing what you are already doing, work-study students could earn a scholarship this spring.  Learn more about the program, scholarship opportunities and requirements below.

 Next Steps for Hired Students

FIRST STEPS TO BECOMING A WORK-STUDY STUDENT!

Step 1: Submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Assistance). When asked if you are interested in work-study, answer YES!  If you've already submitted your FAFSA don't make a FAFSA correction to add work-study – just request a work-study award through your IU email. You'll be notified by email when awarded.  Only requests sent through your IU email can be considered.

Step 2: Wait! You will receive an email with your next steps to find a work-study position and another email you must take with you when applying for positions that will serve as your work-study application and confirmation that you have an award.  While you are waiting review the section here on training and certification to increase your opportunity for a work-study scholarship and beef up your resume.

Step 3: Apply for jobs! Review the list of open work-study positions. Each listing gives instructions about how to apply, and only work-study award recipients can apply for these jobs. Positions working with children, money or confidential information require us to run a background check before you can be hired. Not all work-study recipients find jobs. This award does not guarantee you a job, and we do not find a job for you. You must apply and compete for available work-study jobs just as you would for any other job. The employer does not have to hire you, so dress and act as if you were at a job interview when you apply.

NEXT STEPS FOR HIRED WORK-STUDY STUDENTS

Step 1: Hired? Congratulations! Fill out employment paperwork and learn how to submit your hours worked so you can get paid. Go to the IU Southeast Human Resources office to do this unless your employer gives you the needed forms and trains you on how to use the on-line timesheet system.

Step 2: Work and get paid!  If you signed up for Direct Deposit you'll get paid that day from your previous time sheet. If you don't log your hours correctly you won't get paid until the next pay period.  If you make a mistake on your time sheet notify your supervisor immediately.  Don't wait until the end of the pay period or it may be too late to make a correction.

Step 3:  Read the Student Employee Manual and take the test!  Discuss this step with your employer.  You should be able to do this while you are clocked in.  The manual is available through our forms link.

Step 3: Track your earnings so you don't exceed your maximum earnings limit (your work-study award is this limit). Report your hours exactly as they are worked. Don't guess, don't round up or down. Don't post hours you did not work.  Use the Excel spreadsheet tracker or print a tracking sheet to help, both available through our forms link.

WORK-STUDY TRAINING and CERTIFICATION

Why become certified?

  • Certified Student workers are given priority consideration for open work-study positions on campus and in the community.
  • Certification tells future employers that you are pre-qualified as a student with initiative who will be a responsible leader in the workplace.
  • Earn at least a Level 2 certification to be considered for the Student Employee Excellence Award, a scholarship based on your work performance and your participation in events designed to help you succeed in the workplace. List your certification on your resume under "Additional Training" or "Awards" when applying for your outside jobs too!

How to become certified: Levels 1 - 5

Certification will be awarded based on your accumulated participation in Student Employee Success Events every year, beginning with Level 1 and rising to Level 5. JUMPSTART to achieve 2 levels the 1st year just by doing what you are probably already doing - working hard and attending awesome campus events throughout the year! Each year your participation and good work build on eachother to take you higher. Scholarships will be given based on your level of achievement and certificates will be presented in the spring ceremony, "Commitment to Student Learning Awards".

  • Level 1: Attend at least 3 "Student Employee Success Events" (must be repeated yearly)
  • Level 2: Complete one-time on-line training (6 modules) and every year receive a positive employer evaluation

No special application is required. All students who hold work-study jobs in the current school year will be considered. The best way to qualify is to be an excellent, responsible employee and attend or complete the other optional activities. Students who complete on-line training must forward their completion notification emails for each module to the work-study coordinator for credit. Attendance will be taken at all training opportunities and student success events. Scholarships generally range from $100 to $500 per student and are non-renewable awards. This scholarship opportunity will continue as long as funds are available, though actual award amounts may fluctuate. Students must have a minimum 2.0 GPA.
