Indiana University Southeast is one of five Indiana University campuses participating in the year-round middle and high school intervention program for ninth through eleventh grade students. The program will have three major components:

  • Weekly, distance learning sessions
  • Community-based student investigation projects

A six-week summer residential academic experience on the Indiana University Bloomington campus.

Indiana University Southeast Upward Bound Project

The Indiana University Southeast Upward Bound Project is a year-round middle- and high-school college preparation program, designed to give participants the best chance to qualify for and excel in post-secondary education.

The Project targets 50 students, grades 9-12, who are low income and/or first generation, and who attend specified high schools in five Indiana University regional campus sites - Bloomington, Gary, Kokomo, Indianapolis and New Albany.

The Project has three major components:

  • twice-monthly academic year distance learning sessions
  • weekly tutoring sessions
  • a six-week summer residential academic experience on the IU - Bloomington campus

During the academic year, the twice-monthly distance learning sessions are coordinated out of the IU Bloomington campus, and interact with classrooms on all participating campuses of Indiana University. Students are exposed to:

  • dynamic speakers from many disciplines
  • college skills training - individual/group research, note-taking, time management, study skills
  • test preparation - class finals, ISTEP, SAT
  • educational field trips

Students receive free homework help and tutoring during the academic year in the following areas:

  • Math/Science (weekly)
  • English/Literature/Social Sciences (weekly)
  • other subjects (as required)

The 6-week summer residential academic experience involve the top 50 students from all participating sites. Students will live in a dormitory (under expert supervision) and take specially designed classes on the Indiana University-Bloomington campus, with all expenses paid. The students are exposed to:

  • expert instruction by college-level instructors
  • assigned projects and assignments with deadlines
  • tutoring services available 5 days a week
  • enrichment field trips
  • choosing a major/career planning
  • how to apply for college
  • how to complete financial aid form

Successful tenure in the program includes:

  • completion of the Indiana high school Core 40 academic courses
  • maintenance of a cumulative grade point average which will be at least 2.95 on a 4.0 scale by the time of graduation
  • timely participation in Upward Bound activities, including aptitude testing preparation and completion
