Why Study RN to BS in Nursing Program at IU Southeast?

The RN-BSN Mobility program at IU Southeast is designed for graduates of associate degree nursing programs who hold the RN license who are not interested in distance learning. All required nursing courses are available on a one-day-a-week schedule. The curriculum is started in May of one year and completed in May of the following year. For additional information, contact the academic advisor at (812) 941-2283.

Why Study Image

The RN-BSN mobility program has been developed to address the specific needs of working registered nurses who return to the university to earn the BSN. It is designed for RNs whose highest academic credential in nursing is a diploma or associate degree in nursing.

RN to BSN courses are offered using a variety of instructional methods to facilitate student learning and ease of mobility.

  • In most cases, the student can take courses by attending class only one day a week.
  • Upon admission to the nursing cohort, the registered nurse can graduate within one year.
  • Credit is awarded for relevant courses taken at other accredited institutions of higher learning.
  • Registered nurses receive advanced standing in the baccalaureate program following successful completion of required nursing transition courses.
  • Registered nurses can receive credit for valid specialty certification from a professional nursing organization in an appropriate area of nursing. A maximum of 2 credit hours may be awarded.
  • Students can receive credit for prior knowledge and skills consistent with specific required course objectives/outcomes through the portfolio option.
  • Many academic activities can be integrated into the RN's current professional practice.

Registered nurses wishing to earn a Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing at Indiana University Southeast may apply online for admission to the University through the Office of Admissions. Unless otherwise specified, all Indiana University School of Nursing BSN program policies apply to RN undergraduate students.

Students who have attended other colleges or universities must request that an official transcript be forwarded to the Office of Admissions. A credit transfer report (CTR) listing transferable credit will be generated by the Office of Admissions. Upon receipt of the CTR, the student should contact the nursing academic advisor to review the CTR, identify coursework to be completed, and explain the process for achieving advanced standing with credit. Call (812) 941-2283 to make an appointment with the advisor. Credit will be awarded for relevant courses completed at other accredited institutions of higher learning. Students are eligible to enroll in courses upon:

  1. receiving notification from the Office of Admissions that they have been admitted to the university,
  2. attending an advising session with the academic advisor [call (812) 941-2283 for an appointment].
  3. verification of registered nurse license in Indiana, and
  4. attainment of a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale in all work attempted.

Placement of RN students in nursing courses is based upon space availability, credit hours completed toward the degree, and GPA. It is particularly important for registered nurses to take courses as they become available. Failure to do so may seriously affect progression through the program.

RN-BSN students receive advanced standing in the baccalaureate program following successful completion of required nursing transition courses (B304 and B404). Special credit will be awarded for the following nursing courses once the transition courses are completed and students have paid any specified credit hour special fees:

Nursing elective credit for Z490/Z492 (Clinical Experience in Nursing/Independent Study in Nursing) may be awarded to RNs holding valid specialty certification from a professional nursing organization in an appropriate area of nursing. A maximum of 2 credit hours may be awarded.

Portfolio Option: Students also may pursue the portfolio option if they believe they have knowledge and skills consistent with specific required course objectives/outcomes. If a student wishes to pursue this mechanism for advanced standing, the student must contact the academic advisor. This should be done during the semester prior to the semester in which the student would actually need to take the course. If the portfolio is not accepted, the student must register for and successfully complete the course. (Please see portfolio review process under SON academic policies.)

For specific information on advanced-standing procedures, registered nurse applicants should contact the academic nursing counselor on the campus of enrollment.

Thirty hours credit in residency is required for the baccalaureate degree. RN students must meet this requirement to be eligible for graduation. The following required nursing courses may be used to meet the residency requirement:
